7th New Members Group – Critique Evening: Narrative and Emotion

NEW MEMBERS CRITIQUE EVENING

 with Jerry Webb

Thursday 20th March 2025 @ 7:30pm

Our next New Members Group meeting is on Thursday 20th March and it’s a critique evening. The point of the critique is to give you the opportunity to show your images and to receive considered feedback on them. There is so much to learn when experienced others cast their eyes on our work and offer a critique.

This New Member Group session is a follow-up to Jerry Webb’s February workshop on Narrative and Emotion in Photography.  Jerry will be our commentator and he’ll give some constructive feedback on what works and what might be done differently to make the images even stronger.  Jerry will also encourage comments from the photographer and discussion from the group.

What do you need to do?
Submit up to two images or sets of images on the theme of Narrative and/or Emotion:

  • A single image or a set of three images which tells a story. The set can be presented as a single image made up of 3 components or a series of 3 single images
  • A self-portrait which tells a story or portrays emotion in some way

If you want to remind yourself of Jerry’s workshop or – if you weren’t able to attend – start to think about it, you may find his notes helpful:

General Practicalities
The images will be shown as digital projected images (DPI).
Your images may be colour or black & white.

Preparing your images
Save them as high-res JPG files.
For size, please follow the dimensions recommended for the Club’s main critique evenings: the maximum width is 1920 pixels and the maximum height is 1080 pixels; the minimum height and depth is 900 pixels; the maximum file size is 2MB.
If you don’t understand the Club sizing or don’t have the software to resize your image then send John a high-res JPG and he’ll do the rest.

Submitting your images
Please submit your images as attachments to John Owen at MontyZoomer1250@gmail.com by midnight on 16/3/25.
Put NMG Submission in the Subject line and the titles of the images and your name in the email. Please make sure that the file names match the titles as much as possible. John will reply to you on receipt of an entry image – so if you don’t get a reply it means it hasn’t arrived.

Critique Format
Each image is discussed and is assigned a Gold/Silver/Bronze/Credit by the commentator – in this case by Jerry Webb. Although it’s tempting to get carried away by awards, it’s the commentary and discussion that are key to learning and improving.
The NMG critique evenings are a really good way to get used to receiving constructive criticism and to get to know each other’s work. Because we’re quite a small group we can be relatively informal and there’s usually plenty of opportunity for you to take part in discussion.

Be sure to arrive promptly for the 7.30pm start.

We will aim to finish up around 9.30 and those who want to can head to Hove Place for a well-deserved drink and more photography chat.

We look forward to seeing you all.

Please RSVP so that we know who is planning on joining us.

Best Wishes
