Low Light / Film Noir Critique Evening – Chris Gil
Our next New Members Group evening is on Thursday 11th December at the English Language Centre at 7.30pm.

You’re invited to submit two images relating to the low light theme. This could be either a general low light image and/or a Film Noir image for a book or film poster.
For the Film Noir theme, imagine that you’ve just finished writing a crime thriller based in Brighton (think Peter James or Ruth Ware) and you have to produce a Book Cover/Film Poster for your novel/screenplay. Your aim is to create an image which tells a dark story or conveys a moody atmosphere.
You should also consider ‘negative’ space to accommodate text and we’re happy for you to include book- or film-related text in your final image if you want to.
General Practicalities
The images will be shown as digital projected images (DPI).
Your images may be colour or black & white.
Preparing your images
Save them as high-res JPG files.
For size, please follow the dimensions recommended for the Club’s main critique evenings: the maximum width is 1920 pixels and the maximum height is 1080 pixels; the minimum height and depth is 900 pixels; the maximum file size is 2MB.
If you don’t understand the Club sizing or don’t have the software to resize your image then send Jo a high-res JPG and she’ll do the rest.
Submitting your images
Please submit your images as attachments to Jo Teasdale at joteasdale172@icloud.com by midnight on Monday 8th December 2025.
Put the titles of the images and your name in the email. Please make sure that the file names match the titles as much as possible. Jo will reply to you on receipt of an entry image – so if you don’t get a reply it means it hasn’t arrived.
Critique Format
Chris will discuss each image and he’ll also encourage group discussion. It’s a really good way to get used to receiving constructive feedback / a critique of your work and to get to know each other’s work.
We will aim to finish up around 9.30 and those who want to can head to Hove Place for a well-deserved drink and more photography chat.
